Rachel and The Stranger (1948) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #RachelandTheStranger William Holden, Loretta Young and Robert Mitchum are the powerhouse performers in this great Western classic that The New York Times hailed as “excellent moviemaking.” Splendidly depicting the untamed frontier of the 1820s, the film tells the impassioned story of Big Davey Harvey (Holden), a stoic backwoodsman who “buys” and marries a bondswoman, Rachel (Young), to care for and educate his motherless son. Neither the father nor son find much to appreciate in Rachel until Jim Fairways (Mitchum), a guitar-strumming hunter, shows a romantic interest in her. Violent jealousy erupts between the two men, settled only after a spectacular raid on the Harveys’ homestead by unmerciful Shawnee Indians. But which man will win Rachel’s heart? This new presentation restores nearly 15 minutes of footage cut from the film over 65 years ago. Also restored is the screen credit for its blacklisted writer Waldo Salt, which was removed from the film by RKO for its 1954 theatrical re-release. COWBOY (1958) Theatrical Trailer - Glenn Ford, Jack Lemmon, Anna Kashfi

Jack Lemmon is Frank Harris, an energetic young man who has fallen in love with Maria Vidal (Anna Kashfi, The Mountain), a beautiful Mexican senorita. But he can't have her because her father, a wealthy cattle baron, is convinced that his daughter deserves better -- and by better he means a man with a future, not a hotel clerk from Chicago. When fast-talking cowboy Tom Reese (Glenn Ford, Gilda, The Big Heat) and his cattle drivers storm the hotel, Frank quickly concludes that fate has given him the perfect opportunity to convince Maria's father that he is worthy of her love. Later that day, after Tom loses all of his money while playing cards, Frank offers to give him his savings if he makes him a partner and lets him ride the trail back to Mexico where Maria lives. Loosely based on Frank Harris' novel My Reminiscences as a Cowboy, Delmer Daves' Cowboy is essentially an eye-opener for folks who might have been under the impression that cattle drivers in the Old West were honorable and prosperous men who lived their lives to the fullest. For the most part, this film tells it as it was: Cattle driving was a tough and extremely dangerous job and the cowboys that did it were often desperate men who barely made ends meet. The film is full of fascinating contrasts. Almost immediately after Frank joins Tom's outfit he has a number of painful experiences that quickly convince him that life outside of Chicago is not only harsh, but unforgiving as well. Later on, Frank also realizes that Tom's men are ready to abandon each other if they sense that danger is near. Some of these discoveries are infused with light humor, but life on the trail is never even remotely romanticized. The evolution of Frank and Tom's relationship is rather predictable -- both undergo dramatic character transformations that eventually force them to see the world they live in from a completely different angle and reevaluate their lives -- but the terrific chemistry between Lemmon and Ford during the journey is what gives the film its identity. Brian Donlevy, who plays a retired marshal, also leaves a lasting impression. The bulk of the outdoor footage was shot on location in New Mexico and Oklahoma. The massive stampede does not look as intense as the one seen in Howard Hawks' epic Red River, but it is very well shot and there a few sequences where it literally feels like the camera is placed right in the middle of it. Also worth mentioning is the bull ring sequence, but a few times the camera comes too close to the angry bull and it becomes quite clear that its horns are not real. Daves shot Cowboy with cinematographer Charles Lawton Jr. It was one of three westerns the two did together. The other two are the classic 3:10 to Yuma and Jubal. The film's opening animated title sequence was created by the legendary graphic designer Saul Bass (Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, Stanley Kramer's It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World).

The Deadly Trackers (1973) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #TheDeadlyTrackers Sheriff Kilpatrick makes sure his town lives by the rule of the law. "We must not allow guns to do our thinking for us," he decrees. But even a man as determined as Kilpatrick has his limits. When marauding outlaws kill his wife and son, he invokes a new rule: the rule of the gun. Richard Harris (A Man Called Horse, Unforgiven) portrays Kilpatrick, a deadly tracker seeking revenge. Kilpatrick is single-minded, unsparing and bullet-hard. Although his badge gives him no jurisdiction in Mexico, he still carries his pursuit across the border. Rod Taylor (Inglourious Basterds) plays Brand, a killer among killers, the murderous gang's leader. The bad-guy role is a departure for Taylor, and he makes the most of it with gusto. His slaughter of the English language is exceeded only by the human slaughter he leaves in his wake. The Deadly Trackers bears the explosive imprint of two action-movie specialists: director Barry Shear (Wild in the Streets, Across 110th Street) and screenwriter Lukas Heller (The Dirty Dozen, The Flight of the Phoenix). In their hands, it becomes a heart-pounding adventure of justice at any cost. Where the law ends, The Deadly Trackers begins. BUCK AND THE PREACHER (1972 ) – Official Trailer

Check out the trailer for the 1972 classic Buck and The Preacher. Watch Now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4ULWdZl1BM This film was selected by AAFCA member, Lisa Kennedy, as part of the series, Sony Pictures Action Presents: A Roundtable Discussion with the African American Film Critics Association. Learn more here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLtS3b7EJCpfU0kXP9FV7uBC8Olsq0cxKk BUCK AND THE PREACHER REVIEW BY LISA KENNEDY Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte bring powder-keg chemistry to this 1972 western. Buck (Poitier) organizes wagon trains for former slaves headed West. As a slippery preacher-man, Belafonte carries a Bible that houses more than the gospels and has been outfitted with false teeth meant to temper his beauty (they don’t). Ruby Dee’s Ruth brings exquisite backbone to her and Buck’s homestead. Hired by Louisiana plantation owners, Nightriders (led by a nasty piece of work, played by Cameron Mitchell) terrorize the settlers to force them to turn back and return South where there is “work” for them. Smart about Jim Crow labor practices, the movie is visionary in prioritizing the economic underpinnings of racism. It is equally prescient about the shifting alliance of Blacks and Indians. This was Poitier’s directorial debut. Like so many actors behind the camera, he elicits strong and subtle performances. But he nails something more elusive for first-time directors: He keeps a brisk, involving forward motion. Jazz great Benny Carter composed a killer, mouth-harp twangy score. As significant as “Buck and the Preacher” rates in the annals of black filmmaking, it also shares the rebellious vibe with other westerns of the period, “The Life and Time of Judge Roy Bean” and “Jeremiah Johnson” among them. ABOUT BUCK AND THE PREACHER Widely regarded at the time of its release as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with a social conscience, BUCK AND THE PREACHER is an immensely satisfying Western which marked Sidney Poitier's directorial debut, as well as his first screen pairing with superstar Harry Belafonte. Poitier stars as Buck, an ex-Union Army Cavalry sergeant who becomes a scout for freed slaves heading to the Colorado frontier. Tagging along with him are his wife (Ruby Dee in a scene-stealing performance) and a Bible-thumping con artist known as the Preacher (Belafonte). Attacked by racist bounty hunters determined to return the former slaves to a life of sharecropping in Louisiana, Buck and his followers must summon all the courage they have in order to reach their destination and help settle the Wild West.
