The Backyard Boys is the first collaboration in children's books for Ellen Smith and Maureen Holmes Brown.

Ellen, a retired teacher of 18 years, knew from an early age that her life was destined to revolve around children. Education was both her passion and her calling.

​

Maureen, a Michigander at heart, is a retired film professional and independent filmmaker. She harbors a lifelong love of movies, storytelling, and entertainment.

​

Both embrace a rich family life and a deep, enduring love of nature.

​

The Backyard Boys is illustrated by the new young artist Elena Sanchez, making her debut in children's literature.

Growing up in Borrego Springs, California, Sanchez says she learned independence and resilience in an environment of open skies and peaceful nights, and has always used art as a means of storytelling and as a way to bring imagination to life.
